Study points

  • Denmark uses IALA Region A. Verify the direction of buoyage and local chart information for the waterway.
  • Region B reverses the Region A lateral colours: green is to port and red to starboard when entering from seaward.
  • Cardinal marks indicate the safe-water quadrant relative to the mark; combine topmark, colour and light character.
  • The emergency wreck mark uses blue and yellow vertical stripes and a blue/yellow alternating light to alert mariners to a newly identified wreck.
  • The direction of buoyage is defined and shown for the waterway; do not assume it from destination or first sighting.
  • Use multiple cues and current chart information. A light alone may not identify a mark uniquely.
