Study points

  • The skipper must monitor position, weather, traffic and equipment. Electronic alarms are useful but do not replace a proper watch.
  • Prompt alarm, continuous visual contact, safe manoeuvring and recovery actions are essential; assign tasks and alert rescuers as appropriate.
  • Secured stowage reduces hazards and helps maintain stability; moving weights can affect balance and create injury risks.
  • Early preparation and conservative decisions preserve control and crew safety. Forecasts are uncertain and local conditions can change quickly.
  • A departure check should confirm readiness of the vessel and people, including equipment, weather, route, fuel and communications.
  • Use suitable safety equipment and planned movement procedures; exact attachment practice depends on the vessel and conditions.
  • The vessel must be manoeuvred with its actual response in mind, including windage, speed, stopping, steering and propulsion limits.
